How to keep the Network Secured?

By: Gian Carlo G. Gamboa

Network? When you heard the word network, what do you think first? Was it internet? Or maybe some sort of new knowledge that you will learn soon as you finish reading this blog of mine ;).

So here’s a fact. Based on webopedia, a network is consist of two or more computer systems that are linked together. Let’s hope that the traffic jam along EDSA weren’t always linked together.

For example, a LANs or so-called local-area network wherein the computers are on the same building or they’re close together. As close as your girlfriend or boyfriend to his/her “bestfriend”.

Going back to the topic. Securing a business or home network isn’t really easy as you may think. But thanks to those people who contribute their knowledge in securing a network. Especially to Mr. Google We can be at ease for now if you follow the footsteps that you will hear as you read this article of mine. Do you hear it? Just kidding.

According to the computerworld.com, oh well hello internet.
Here are some critical steps you can follow to keep your data secured and prevent from going to other’s home.

1. Use Encryption on your wireless access point (AP).
When I say Encryption, it means that a process in which a code or information that only the authorized personnel can access it. Which also means it refrains your data to be accessed by other.
One of this example is you password in your facebook or other social media account.

2. Make sure that you have anti-virus software in your PCs preventing some malicious hackers that stalks you every night.

Yeah, this is actually obvious to put anti-virus software to your own PCs. But it really should restate this one. There are many anti-virus software that can be searched thru google.

Some are free and of course many of it are should be paid. Darling, we’re in the modern world now. Freebies are not a thing, especially when you work hard to create something.

But, if you already have an anti-virus software make sure that your software is updated. Coz believe me, Viruses spreads quickly than the speed of light.

3. Disable file/print sharing on everything other than you file server. But if you’re generous go ahead and share it to everyone.

This one is particularly important for the laptop users. Do you want your file to be broadcasted to everyone? I hope you’re not. This something I often see when I open my network sharing while using a wifi in a hotel, or some cafĂ©.

4. Change important default settings.

A router always have many default settings. Since those were set up by the vendors, it is commonly known in the public. By setting your network or router to a default settings. It’s like you’re helping a burglar to come to your house and

Steal your things. Coz it will help them make the setup process easier and it will make your router more vulnerable to unauthorized access.

5. Start doing regular off-site backups now.

Backups not rebound or other options. Not like as many as you choose from the more chances of winning. What I mean of back up is that you should start making copies of your file or some business data. Save it on flash drive.
And in case of fire. There are some websites that offers online storage of your file for example eVault and Amazon.com’s S3. You can also save it on yahoo even in Microsoft.

Now, there are more ways in securing your network or your file that will make you at ease and will probably give your stalkers a hard time in attempting to breach your network. But these are some that I know and really easy to implement that won’t Cost your time and money. And I hope that you learned something from this good guy. Thank you! And God bless!
